What is YouTube Music?

  • An innovative mobile app and desktop player

  • More of the music you love. It will be easier to find covers, new songs and content of your favourite musicians
  • A new search feature, that allows you to search by more random terms, even if you don’t know the song title. Like ‘that song from Big Little Lies’.
  • The home screen will be personalized and dynamically adapt to provide you with recommendations based on listening history, location and on what you’re doing.
  • Endless playlists are built to help you discover new music. Based on your taste, there will always be something you’re in the mood for
VidCon happened!

This month, VidCon took place in the US and naturally, a lot of YouTube related buzz has been happening. What we found particularly interesting is a post that YouTube release on the Creator Blog just afterwards about future developments and features.

So, what can we expect?

More ways to create revenue: YouTube is working on new tools to allow creators new sources of income. This started last year with SuperChat and has continued with Ticketing, Merchandise and more.

Channel Memberships: YouTube will soon be expanding the Channel Membership to eligible channels with more than 100,000 subscribers. The feature allows viewers to pay a monthly recurring fee of $4.99 to get unique badges, new emoji, Members-only posts in the Community tab, and access to unique custom perks.

Merchandise: Many YouTuber might already be selling their own Merchandise to fans. YouTube is now making it easier, by streamlining the process. They have teamed up with Teespring so creators can choose from over 20 merchandise items to customize and sell via a shelf on their channel. This is now available to all eligible U.S.-based channels with over 10,000 subscribers.

Premieres: This is a new feature! With Premieres, creators can now publish pre-recorded videos as a live moment. When setting this up, a landing page will automatically be created to hype up the new content and give viewers more information. Anyone then tuning in to watch the premiere can chat with each other and the creator in a real live chat.

#ProudToCreate

June is Pride and YouTube has released this years campaign amongst a lot of backlash from the LGBTQ+ community about demonetizing content or even showing homophobic advertising before the videos. YouTube has taken the criticism onboard and are working on making the platform more inclusive, tolerant and hopefully space for everyone to share their stories.

Football Fever

It’s World Cup time! The globe is in full football fever and YouTube is no different. The platform has made this year’s World Cup much easier to enjoy.

You can get highlights from official FIFA broadcasters in more than 80 countries. The likes of the BBC in the U.K., ARD Sportschau in Germany, NHKin Japan, Kwese in Nigeria and across Africa, Televisa in Mexico, Telemundoin the U.S., Latina Televisión in Peru will showcase the best bits on their YouTube channels. If you are lucky and are in the USA, you can watch all games live where YouTube TV is available.
